Professional Development

The Conference provides dozens of informative training programs every year, ranging from fundamental trial skills development to specialized programs focusing on a particular criminal law area. Some of these training programs are designed exclusively for prosecutors, but many are open to law enforcement, legal assistants, court staff, and other allied professionals. The Conference gratefully acknowledges the grant funding that makes many of these trainings possible.

No Safe Place: Building the Child Physical Abuse Case

  • May 16, 2024 – May 17, 2024

Children face the most danger from abuse in their own homes. Child physical abuse can take many forms, from malnutrition to broken bones to burns and bites. Proving who is responsible and how those injuries occurred can be a monumental task when everything happens behind closed doors and at the hands of a caregiver. This training will help prosecutors, law enforcement, and other allied professionals understand how to build a case of physical abuse despite the challenges these cases can present.

What You Do Matters: Lessons from the Holocaust

What You Do Matters

  • June 6, 2024

This program examines policing within the legal and political framework of Nazi Germany- a journey that eventually turned those who should protect life and liberty into those who intimidated, humiliated, deported, and eventually murdered millions of innocent people. Using historical images and stories from the Holocaust, this course engages law enforcement and prosecutors in a dialogue about the role of law enforcement in today’s communities and the importance of core values ensuring the integrity and vibrancy of democracy.

Regional DWI: Nuts and Bolts

  • June 6, 2024 – June 7, 2024

This two-day training will cover hot topics and issues that prosecutors and officers ask us about throughout the year. We will provide information about impaired driving and traffic safety issues that aren’t always in the mainstream as well as routine issues that can always be improved.

Summer Association Meeting

  • June 17, 2024 – June 19, 2024

The NC District Attorneys Association (NCDAA) meeting is a statewide training program devoted to prosecutors, and it is approved by the NC State Bar to fully satisfy prosecutors’ annual continuing legal education requirements, including the required ethics hours. NCDAA calls upon the collective skills of the State’s most experienced criminal law experts, guest speakers, top prosecutors, and others with the required depth of knowledge to provide a comprehensive continuing legal education program.

Registration:

Early registration is $230.00 and includes your $40 annual association dues, 12 hours of CLE courses, 3 breakfasts, all breaks, and the Monday evening social. Registration ends on May 24th, 2024. If space is still open after the cut-off date, there will be an additional $20 late fee.

Navigating the Maze of Mental Illness

Navigating the Maze of Mental Illness

  • July 12, 2024

No matter what type of cases they handle, prosecutors are likely to encounter defendants who have mental health issues. Whether District Court or Superior Couty, incapable to proceed or insane, the intersection of the criminal court system and the mental health system is both incredibly important and extremely confusing. This one-day course will help prosecutors navigate the labyrinth of managing defendants who may be dealing with mental health issues.
